Poptropica is an onlinerole-playing game, developed in 2007 by Pearson Education's Family Education Network, and targeted towards children aged 6 to 15. Poptropica was primarily the creation of Jeff Kinney, the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. As of 2015, he remains at the company as the Creative Director.[1]

In the game, players can go to different 'islands' (game quest scenarios), compete in multiplayer games, and communicate with each other. The islands all have various difficulties, but all center on a problem that the player must resolve by going through multiple obstacles or completing goals. All islands, upon finishing, award 'Poptropica credits' which are non-negotiable but may be used to buy costumes and special effects in the Poptropica store.

In 2011, Poptropica was listed on Time magazine's list of '50 Websites that Make the Web Great', where it was described as 'an inventive megasite for kids with a wholesome and slightly educational bent.'[2] In 2012, Poptropica had an Alexa Internet rating of 1,302 in the United States, and a ranking of 5,162 in the world.[3] By 2012, the game had grown to have over 500 million registered users, with 35 million in the 15-25 age group.[4] Versions of the game have been released on Nintendo DS and 3DS, and iOS mobile devices. In May 2015, it was announced that Family Education Network was sold by Pearson to the interactive-education venture capitalist Sandbox Networks,[5] and that Poptropica had 'over 3.2 million monthly unique users in 200 countries and territories.'[6]

In 2015, Poptropica was sold to educational-technology investment ground, Sandbox Partners.[7]

Gameplay

Poptropica Drill Bit

When it first launched in 2007, Poptropica only had one island, titled Early Poptropica Island. As of 2017, it has 58 islands to be explored, all with a different theme: examples include Back Lot Island, where the player helps produce a movie, and Super Power Island, where their goal is to defeat six super villains. Each island has its own quest, for which a player can receive an island medallion as well as 150 credits to spend in the in-game Poptropica Store. Starting July 6, 2011, Poptropica allowed players to replay islands without creating a new account, while still keeping track of all the Medallions the player had earned.

Advertisements

In addition to the available island quests, advertisers contract for temporary mini-games that appear on the site, sometimes targeted to players of a certain age group or gender. Regular advertisers have included Disney, Kellogg's Froot Loops, Lego toys, and various animated movies and DVD releases. Advertisement mini-games normally appear only during a two-week period. If the player completes an advertisement mini-game, they receive a temporary prize, usually related to the media being advertised.

A few Poptropica islands are themed after certain book series: these include Big Nate, Timmy Failure, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Magic Tree House. These islands are permanent, and can be played at any time. In 2015, a total of seven of these islands became members-only.

Mini-games

Poptropica features different mini-games that users can play with other people. These include Switch, Sudoku, Hoops, Sky Dive, Paint War, Star Link, Balloons, Soupwords and Pathwise. The game keeps track of how many times the player wins or loses a certain mini-game.

Expansions

Island Creator Kit

In August 2013, an island creator kit was made available for purchase. It is an activity book that walks the player through all the same steps the developers take when they make a new Island: coming up with a storyline, creating characters, and designing puzzles.

Poptropica Adventures

In 2012, in partnership with Ubisoft, Poptropica released a new video game for the Nintendo DS, titled Poptropica Adventures.[8]

Poptropica: Forgotten Islands

On September 5, 2013, Poptropica launched Poptropica: Forgotten Islands, an iOS game, which allows players to meet new characters and discover story elements about Poptropica by finding artifacts littered throughout the game. It was also released on the Nintendo 3DS system through Ubisoft in 2014.[9] It has been replaced on iOS with a mobile version of the desktop Poptropica game.

Poptropica Worlds

On January 11, 2017, Poptropica announced via their blog that they were introducing another game called Poptropica Worlds, developed in Unity. It was released in Spring 2017. Poptropica Worlds has new features, such as redesigned characters, customizable homes, and new Islands. Returning players are able to port over their avatar's look and name to Poptropica Worlds. Poptropica Worlds can be played on both the web and mobile. If membership was bought for Poptropica, it carries over to Poptropica Worlds, and vice versa.

Escape from Pelican Rock is the 46th island quest on Poptropica.

Plot Summary[edit | edit source]

'Pelican Rock is the toughest prison ever built. And after you're framed for a crime you didn't commit, it's your new home! Use your wits to devise an escape plan, and your nerve to pull it off. But getting out is just the beginning - because the real criminal is still out there!'

Written Guide[edit | edit source]

This article is a stub. Please help Poptropica Wiki by expanding it, adding pictures, and improving existing text.

The island starts off in Bay City, which is based off of San Francisco. Walk left upon arrival. After talking to a few people, a thief known as the Booted Bandit runs by. You run after them up a hill. When you get to the top, however, you see the money the Booted Bandit left on the ground. You go to pick it up, but when you do, the Booted Bandit throws a bag over your head and turns out to be your doppelgänger with boots on! The police come, and the Booted Bandit runs away. You try to tell the police that you've been framed, but they don't believe you, thinking that you're the Booted Bandit. You get arrested and taken to the terrible Pelican Rock Prison.

You're taken to your cell, just in time for lockdown. After being locked up, you will notice a scanner at the top of the screen showing where the guard is. This will become useful later on. For now, walk to the right and pick up the Metal Cup. You can also check the grate in the wall or play with the radio, but you need to go to bed.

Day 1

Recreation

An alarm will suddenly sound as your first full day at Pelican Rock Prison begins. You'll be outside at the recreation area with all of your fellow prisoners. To move on with the plot, you'll need to talk to everyone. Some of them will become your friends and help you escape, like Patches, Marion, Van Nostrand, and a pair of twins. But others, like Florian and Big Tuna, hate you as they think you are the Booted Bandit, and they never really got along with them. After you get to know everyone, Warden Sharp appears. Well, I have to admit, Warden Sharp is kind of mean, but at least he/she isn't some super villain in disguise like someone we know. (I'm looking at you, Dr. Jupiter.) Anyway, you and the prisoners line up and get lectured, which is pretty boring, until Big Tuna tries to attack you and gets taken away. Yikes.

Work

Next up is work. You're at license plate duty. To start, go to the guard at the desk to get a Drill Bit. Give it to the other prisoner, and you can start working. It's really easy. Just try to match the license plate at the top by clicking the letters and numbers. Only do 3 plates today. Starting on the second day, you can make 5...or more. You'll get some sticks of Gum. Gum is basically money in Pelican Rock Land. Kind of strange. For now, you'll get 3. That is the perfect number, as you will see in a sec.

Meal Time

Then it's meal time at the mess hall. Don't you think it's weird that you only get one meal a day here? Just wondering. As you enter, you'll be given a Spoon. If you haven't already realized, the guards actually have some common sense here, so you have to return the spoon every time you leave. And the chef guy needs some eggs. You'll get to that later. So, after some drama with finding where to eat and eating disgusting food, good old Patches comes to the rescue. She/he will help you get a second spoon of you give him/her those 3 sticks of gum you got earlier. It's a deal! Patches makes a distraction, and one of the guards comes over. Quickly talk to the other guard who gives you a second spoon without realizing it. So now, in the first time in Poptropica history, you have 2 of the same island without it being a glitch. You finally can get out of the mess hall and give back one of your spoons.

Lockdown

And once again, you're back in your cell for bedtime/lockdown. Now you can test your spoon on the grate and escape! Well, not yet. It's not sharp enough. But that's a problem for tomorrow. You can finally go to sleep and end this terrible day in jail. Don't worry, Day 1 is the longest day. The days should begin to be shorter soon.

Day 2

Recreation

You will find that each day you have the same exact schedule-like SCHOOL! Boring. Anyway, outside at recreation, you'll see Patches feeding the birds. When you talk to her/him, some pelican flies over. You have to hurry to find its nest to steal it's egg. You only have one chance each day, and the location changes, too. So, be quick and carefully. The first nest is at the top-right corner. Jump on the platforms to get the first egg. As you jump back down to Patches, you'll step on and pick up some seeds. Sunflower seeds. I'm allergic to sunflower seeds. But this is Poptropica, where food allergies don't exist. Yay! Back to the quest. If you've been talking to your fellow inmates, you know that poor Van Nostrand wants something alive to paint for once. So plant the seeds in that pile of dirt. Go up to the leaking pipe (like, who even takes care of this place?) and use your metal cup to get a 'Cup of Water. You can use this to water the seeds. However, you can only water them once a day, like the eggs. Also, Marion can give you some Prison Files for exchange for some gum, but that will be tomorrow. And Florian keeps bragging about how fit she/he is, repeating a bunch of numbers over and over. This will eventually become important. Once there is nothing left to do, talk to the guard, and you will start your work for the day.

Work

You begin the boring job of making license plates, but then you see a metal grinder. Bingo! That can sharpen the spoon! But, this is a prison, so guards are watching you every second. You need to distract him/her. So, instead of making 5 license plates, make 7. Not only will you get more gum, but the machine will break. The guard walks away to fix the thing. Go! Now is your chance! Quickly run to the metal grinder and sharpen the spoon, so you'll have a Sharpened Spoon. Now you can start scratching at the grate! But, you have to wait till lockdown for that.

Meal Time

After a boring, gross meal, you have to go back to your cell.

Lockdown

Once the guard leaves, you can use the spoon and start to chisel away the grate. Be on the lookout for the guard! However, unless you're super fast, you can't get it all done in one night. It might take a while. It doesn't really matter, though, because you can't really go in it without being caught. Oh, if you do get caught, you have to lose some of your gum. Why does everyone love gum so much here?!? What's so special about it?!? Sigh... Well, it's time to go to bed now.

Day 3

Recreation

Time to wake up and start another fun day in jail! Not. At recreation, ask Patches to feed the birds. This time, the best is on the left side of the prison yard. Jump on the statue and platforms to get to the egg. Then, use the pipe to fill the cup with water, and water the sunflower. Also, you can pay Marion 3 sticks of gum to get some Prison Files. You don't have to, but it's funny to look at the files, especially your own, or should I say the Booted Bandit. Why doesn't anyone realize you don't have boots on.

Work and Meal Time

Not much else happens during the rest day. You can work to get more gum, and skip lunch/dinner-whatever-meal-it-is.

Lockdown

Continue chiseling the grate if you're not done. Boring Day 3 is over.

Day 4

Recreation

You get the drill. Wake up. Water the plant. Have Patches feed the Pelicans. This time, the nest is above the second one. Yay! Now you have all 3 eggs!

Work

Earn more gum if you have to!

Meal Time

Now you have three eggs for Flambé and can work in the kitchen! Congrats. In the kitchen, you have to mix some mashed potatoes. It's very easy. All you have to do is click the pot. After Flambé compliments your skills and leaves, you need to click the bowl and you'll get a piece of Uncooked Pasta. Don't eat it, though. You need it for later.

Lockdown

Nothing special happens during Lockdown, but you can chisel the grate and enter the vent before the guard comes back. Not much time to do anything tonight!

Day 5

Recreation

Today, things start to get a little more interesting. Outside the prison yard, water the plant one more time, and you will get a fuller grown Sunflower! Go up to Van Nostrand (the painter) and give it to him/her, and they will give you a Painting! Also, now Van Nostrand will help you with anything you need painted. If you have enough gum, you can have him/her paint the pasta silver with lead paint. This will make it look like a drill bit. But, you have to wait until tomorrow to get it back.

Work and Meal Time

Earn some gum, eat a gross meal and head for Lockdown.

Lockdown

At lockdown, you can enter the vent, and freedom! Just kidding. It just leads to some vent systems. Anyway, right when you enter, there should be some plaster right next to you. Use your cup to get a Cup of Plaster. But be quick. The guard is almost back! Quickly go back to your cell and go to bed.

Day 6

Recreation

Go to Van Nostrand, and they will give you a piece of Painted Pasta. Yay!

At meal time, enter the kitchen, pour the plaster into the potato pot, and stir! Oh, wait, you ruined all of the potatoes and made them almost like marble! Oops. The chef is mad but fortunately, doesn't fire you. When he/she leaves, however, it's your chance. Go over to the potato block on the stool, and use your sharpened spoon and carve it to look like a Poptropican's head! Now you can fool the guards and go into the vents for as long as you want! Except, it needs to be painted. You need Van Nostrand's help! But you have to wait until recreation tomorrow.

Day 7

Poptropica How To Get Drill Bit

Recreation

Go right to Van Nostrand, and pay him/her 5 sticks of gum. They will paint the potato head, but it will take all day. After that, skip through the rest of the day. How boring.

Work, Meal Time and Lockdown

You may skip the rest of the day.

Day 8

Recreation
